Murfreesboro Mayor Shane McFarland has proclaimed this week, March 12-18, “Blue Raider Basketball Week” following the Blue Raiders second C-USA Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in a row.
This will be Middle Tennessee’s third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last five years and ninth in program history.
“As Mayor of the City of Murfreesboro and an MTSU alumnus, I am proud of Middle Tennessee’s excellence on the court, said Mayor Shane McFarland. “Like other alumni, members of the student body, and the citizens of our City, I look forward to watching the Blue Raiders in action this Thursday afternoon against Minnesota.”
The no. 12 seed Blue Raiders (30-4) face no. 5 seed Minnesota Golden Gophers (24-9) in the first round of March Madness at approximately 3 p.m. in Milwaukee. The game will be broadcast on TNT in the South regional. The tournament selection pairings were made Sunday and announced on CBS.
The pairings came after MTSU earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Conference USA tournament title game defeating Marshall 83-72.
Last year, the Blue Raiders, a no. 15 seed, pulled off a major upset in beating no. 2 seed Michigan State 90-81. Michigan State and Minnesota are both in the Big Ten Conference. The Blue Raiders are ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in school history.
